Vooral in het oosten en noordoosten van het land zijn veel van de luchthavens voormalige militaire basis van de Verenigde Staten die opgezet waren tijdens de Vietnamoorlog als bases voor jachtvliegtuigen en B-52 bommenwerpers. In het begin van de 21e eeuw worden bestaande vliegvelden verbeterd en/of uitgebreid ook worden er door het groeiende binnenlandse luchtverkeer nieuwe vliegvelden aangelegd.

Thailand has 109 airports, including six international airports, namely Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Hat Yai, and U Tapao, which are under the supervision of the Airports Authority of Thailand.
The new international airport in Bangkok (Suwannaphum Airport), covers an area of 20,000 rai. It is expected to be able to accommodate 100 million passengers per year and 112 flights per hour. Is is also expected that service efficiency will increase and Thailand will become the center for aviation in the Southeast Asian region. The airport boasts the world's longest runway, 75.3 metres wide by 4,000 metres long.
International services are provided by Angel Airlines and Thai Airways International Public Co., Ltd. Thai Airways has a fleet of 77 airplanes that fly to 76 cities in 35 countries throughout the world. Thai Airways is highly regarded because of the quality of food and the efficiency of the flight attendants, and is one of the most popular airlines. It is part of the Star Alliance Network, which is composed of fifteen airlines, providing a network of airlines that covers the whole world.
Thai Airways also provides domestic services out of Bangkok Airport that cover all regions with regular flights on 22 routes to 26 airports. Other domestic coverage is provided by a private airline, Bangkok Airways, which regularly flies five routes: Bangkok-Sukhothai-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Ranong, Bangkok-Samui Island, Samui Island-Phuket Island, and U Tapao-Samui Island.
Bangkok International Airport (BIA) serves the most air traffic in Thailand with more than 80 airlines providing service and over 25,000,000 passengers, 160,000 flights and 700,000 tons of cargo handled
Phuket International Airport ranks second in the country in terms of passenger and cargo volume. Thanks to the fascinating tourist attractions including the world famous beaches in Phuket and the nearby provinces coupled with a complete range of tourist services, Phuket International Airport welcomes millions of passengers each year.
Chiang Mai International Airport is the gateway to Northern Thailand which is renowned for its breathtaking natural attractions and deep-rooted cultural traditions. The airport has contributed greatly to tourism in the North over the years. Plans are being made to improve and expand the airport in 2006.
The planning and administration of the country's air transport infrastructure is under the shared responsibilitiy of the Airport Authority of Thailand (AAT) and the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) under the Ministry of Transport and Communications. |
